Low-gravity simulator design offers new avenues for space research and mission training ( phys.org )
As humanity continues its exploration of the universe, the low-gravity environment of space presents unusual challenges for scientists and engineers.
Researchers at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the Florida State University-headquartered National High Magnetic Field Laboratory have developed a new tool to help meet that challenge—a novel design for a low-gravity simulator that promises to break new ground for future space research and habitation.
Their new design for a magnetic levitation-based low-gravity simulator can create an area of low gravity with a volume about 1,000 times larger than existing simulators of the same type. The work was published in the journal npj Microgravity.
"Low gravity has a profound effect on the behaviors of biological systems and also affects many physical processes from the dynamics and heat transfer of fluids to the growth and self-organization of materials," said Wei Guo, associate professor in mechanical engineering and lead scientist on the study. "However, spaceflight experiments are often limited by the high cost and the small payload size and mass. Therefore, developing ground-based low-gravity simulators is important."

Existing simulators, such as drop towers and parabolic aircraft, use free fall to generate near-zero gravity. But these facilities typically have short low-gravity durations, i.e., several seconds to a few minutes, which makes them unsuitable for experiments that require long observation times. On the other hand, magnetic levitation-based simulators (MLS) can offer unique advantages, including low cost, easy accessibility, adjustable gravity, and practically unlimited operation time.
But a conventional MLS can only create a small volume of low gravity. When a typical simulator mimics an environment that is about 1 percent of Earth's gravity, the functional volume is only a few micro-liters, too small for practical space research and applications.
In order to increase the functional volume of an MLS, the researchers needed a magnet that would allow a uniform levitation force to be generated that would balance the gravitational force in a large volume. They found that they could achieve this by integrating a superconducting magnet with a gradient Maxwell coil—a coil configuration that was first proposed in the 1800s by physicist James Clark Maxwell.
"Our analysis shows that an unprecedented functional volume of over 4,000 micro-liters can be achieved in a compact coil with a diameter of only eight centimeters," said doctoral student Hamid Sanavandi, a co-author of the paper. "When the current in the MLS is reduced to emulate the gravity on Mars, the functional volume can exceed 20,000 micro-liters, or about 20 cubic centimeters."
The researchers also showed how the MLS can be made using existing high-temperature superconducting materials, which allows it to operate with minimal energy consumption.
This work could prove especially useful in the preparation for future space missions aimed at long-term habitation of the moon and Mars.
"The fact that our MLS design offers a functional volume about three orders of magnitude larger than that for conventional solenoid MLSs makes it a potential game-changer in the low-gravity research field," Guo said. "When this MLS design is used to emulate reduced gravities in extraterrestrial environments, such as on the moon or the Mars, the resulted functional volume is large enough to accommodate even small plants, making this an exciting tool for medical and biology research."

NASA Leader Indicates UFOs Could Be Alien in Origin ( Vision Times )
NASA administrator Bill Nelson recently acknowledged the possibility that some Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings by Navy pilots could be extraterrestrials. He hopes that they are not our “adversary.” Nelson was given the post of NASA Administrator in May.
In a discussion with Larry Sabato from the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, Nelson said that there have been around 300 UFO sightings since some Navy pilots encountered one in 2004. The pilots said that their radars locked onto an object that immediately disappeared. Neither the pilots nor NASA has any explanation for the encounter.
“They don’t know what it is, and we don’t know what it is. We hope it’s not an adversary here on Earth that has that kind of technology. But it’s something. And so, this is a mission that we’re constantly looking — what, who is out there? Who are we? How did we get here? How did we become as we are? How did we develop? How did we civilize? And are those same conditions out there in a universe that has billions of other suns in billions of other galaxies — it’s so large I can’t conceive it,” Nelson said.
Last year, videos released by the Navy showed UFOs performing extreme aerial maneuvers and moving at incredible speeds. One of these videos was from November 2004, which showed former fighter pilot Alex Dietrich’s encounter with a UFO. Dietrich said that the object responded in an unrecognizable manner as it lacked “any visible flight control surfaces or means of propulsion.” The encounter came to be known as the Tic Tac incident.
In June this year, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a short report about the American government’s information on UFOs. The ODNI examined 144 incidents of UFO encounters from government sources. 80 were observed with multiple sensors. Few of the UFOs are believed to have demonstrated “advanced technology.” In 18 incidents, observers described the objects as having unusual flight characteristics or movement patterns.
“Some UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) appeared to remain stationary in winds aloft, move against the wind, maneuver abruptly, or move at considerable speed, without discernible means of propulsion. In a small number of cases, military aircraft systems processed radio frequency (RF) energy associated with UAP sightings. The UAPTF holds a small amount of data that appear to show UAP demonstrating acceleration or a degree of signature management… We are conducting further analysis to determine if breakthrough technologies were demonstrated,” the report said.
Other American officials have also voiced their opinions on UFOs. In an interview with Fox News in June, John Ratcliffe, the former Director of National Intelligence, said that UFOs are a matter of national security. Some of the objects displayed technology that the U.S. neither possesses nor has the ability to counter, he said. Ratcliffe added that the actual number of UFO encounters remains unknown.

Video captures pulsating UFO dropping out of the sky ( New York Post )
Newly released footage of a glowing orb over Mexico has been called “very consistent” with decades of previous reports of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAF) from pilots.
Video obtained by the Daily Mail shows a pulsating, “teardrop-shaped” object zip around a pair of FedEx pilots, who spotted the UFO March 19, 2020, out their windshield while they were flying near Monterrey — though the interloper never popped up on the plane’s radar.
At one point, the “brilliant, yellow-white plasma”-like object appears to rapidly descend from the sky to match the altitude of the two cargo planes, then flash a beam of light in their direction. The orb proceeds to zoom alongside the aircrafts for more than a half-hour before disappearing with a flash of pinkish-purple light.
Footage of the encounter was later analyzed by experts at the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena (NARCAP), a nonprofit that studies UFO sightings and works toward developing safety protocols during such rare and inexplicable occurrences. The pilots have not come forward with their identities, according to the Daily Mail, due to stigma surrounding such controversial events. However, NARCAP Executive Director Ted Roe assured the UK outlet that their account of the floating orb is credible — coming from two career pilots with nearly 30 years of experience combined between the US Air Force and private sectors.
“We have a database going back to 1916. It describes four basic types of UAP encounters and they are balls of light, spheres, cylinders and discs,” he told Daily Mail. The NARCAP report described the pilots as “competent airmen, highly experienced with observing and identifying aircraft, and are capable of determining normal observations and incidents from unusual ones.”
Their claims were said to be “very consistent with what pilots have been reporting for over 100 years.”
Flying a Boeing 767, the first officer “believed that it was a meteor and began to say so when it suddenly stopped near the same altitude as their aircraft.” Then the UFO “projected an illuminating beam of bright, white light on their aircraft, and appeared to take a collision heading,” the report added.
That prompted the men to take “a defensive attitude and [prepare] for evasive control inputs.”
Rather than colliding with the plane, the orb took a turn and “paced” alongside them at a distance of about 1,000 to 2,000 feet away, going 575 mph at 37,000 feet.
“I thought it was a shooting star, but then it stopped,” a pilot can be heard telling his colleague during the almost five-minute video.“It’s like an orb, man — look at that s – – t. It’s pulsating. This is awesome! And he’s not on TCAS [the radar],” one said.
“That is s – – t hot … Oh, man, look at that thing, dude. That is an unidentified flying object, bro, I can finally say I saw one. That is cool,” the captain said.“You saw it just drop out of the sky and just stop?” he asked his co-pilot.
“Yeah. I thought it was a shooting star and then it stopped,” the first officer replied.
The skeptical airmen did speculate whether the orb could be a weather balloon — a meteorological study device commonly mistaken for alien crafts. “The only weather balloon we have is near [inaudible], it’s 15,000-ft AGL [above ground level]. This thing’s above our altitude,” one said.
“We’re going to lose him in the clouds, son of a b – – – h,” the captain said as they neared the end of their cruise alongside the UFO. “There’s weather about 40 miles off our left wingtip where this thing seems to have disappeared. It didn’t have strobes or beacon or nothing.”
While this particular FedEx route was not identified in official reports, UFO debunker Mick West of Metabunk tied flight FDX82 to the mysterious sighting. West believes it may have been camera trickery caused by Venus’ glow. But the pilots told NARCAP that they saw the orb with their naked eyes.
“I went through the analysis. There was some argument that it could have been an astronomical effect. Venus was quite bright that night,” said NARCAP’s Roe. “But when you take the entire narrative of how they describe it dropped in vertically, stopped at their altitude and then paced their aircraft, that is a very consistent story. We’ve had many of those.”
Chi siamo noi? Come siamo arrivati qui? Come siamo diventati come siamo? Come ci siamo sviluppati? Come ci siamo civilizzati?

NASA ADMINISTRATOR BILL NELSON DISCUSSES ASTEROIDS AND PILOT ENCOUNTERS WITH UAP ( The Debrief )
"They know they saw something, and their radars locked on to it," Nelson said during a recent live-stream event that touched on UAP, asteroid defense, and a variety of space-related issues.
Defending Earth from future collisions with asteroids, U.S. space relations with China, and pilot reports involving unidentified aerial phenomena were all among the topics addressed during a University of Virginia live stream event on Tuesday featuring NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
Hosted by politics professor and director of UVA’s Center for Politics Larry Sabato, the live stream chat session addressed questions about the politics of space in the 21st century. Covering a range of questions about NASA and its current efforts, the session included discussions about NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission, where the agency plans to demonstrate the first use of a kinetic impactor to attempt to alter the motion of an asteroid in space.
“Way, way out there, we’re going to intercept this asteroid and DART is going to hit it at 15,000 miles an hour,” Nelson said during the live stream. “We’re going to see if we can, ever so slightly, can move its trajectory.”
Currently in its Phase C stage, NASA’s DART mission is being led by NASA’s Solar System Exploration Program at Marshall Space Flight Center for NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, along with the agency’s Washington-based Science Mission Directorate’s Planetary Science Division.
“Before we leave,” Nelson interjected near the end of the live stream, “I haven’t even talked about the search for extraterrestrial life.”
After briefly discussing NASA’s current Mars mission and its search for evidence of extraterrestrial life on the Red Planet, Nelson shifted the discussion over to Navy pilot encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena, where he referenced hundreds of sightings he says have occurred since the early 2000s.
“Now I know what you’ve seen is what those Navy pilots saw in 2004,” Nelson said during the live stream chat. “And there have been some three hundred sightings since then.”
“I’ve talked to those pilots,” Nelson added, saying that “they know they saw something, and their radars locked on to it. And then all of a sudden it was here on the surface, and then it’s there. And they don’t know what is. And we don’t know what it is.”
Nelson added that he and his administration hope that the unidentified objects reported by military pilots were not advanced aerospace technologies used by countries like China or Russia.
“We hope it’s not an adversary here on Earth that has that kind of technology,” Nelson said.
“But it’s something,” Nelson added. “And so this is a mission that we’re constantly looking [at]. Who is out there? Who are we? How did we get here? How did we become as we are? How did we develop? How did we civilize? And are those same conditions out there in a universe that has billions of other suns in billions of other galaxies?”
“It’s so large I can’t conceive it,” the NASA chief said.
“It was suggested to me by many different people they did want your comment on what you think the fighter pilots saw,” professor Larry Sabato told Nelson. “I think most people saw that 60 Minutes piece, and there were a lot of news pieces about whether or not it was Russia, or China, or perhaps more likely some extraterrestrial intelligent beings.”
When pressed by Sabato about what Nelson personally thought the likeliest explanation for the sightings might be, the NASA chief seemed to imply that extraterrestrial technologies could not be ruled out.
“My personal opinion is that the universe is so big,” Nelson told Sabato, “and now there are even theories that there might be other universes. And if that’s the case, who am I to say that planet Earth is the only location of a life form that is civilized and organized like ours?”
Nelson, who attended the University of Virginia School of Law himself before serving as a U.S. Senator in Florida, was appointed by the Biden Administration to lead NASA in May after having been recognized as the leading space program advocate during his time in Congress.
In June, a report delivered to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) indicated that there were at least 144 known instances logged by sources within the United States Government involving unidentified aerial phenomena. Of these, 80 reports “involved observation with multiple sensors,” and the majority of the reports “described UAP as objects that interrupted pre-planned training or other military activity.”
According to a NASA FAQ page titled “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs/UFOs)” published the same day the ODNI report on UAP appeared online, NASA’s official position is that it does not actively collect information on UAP, although some of its publicly available data may be capable of detecting them.
“NASA does not actively search for UAPs,” the FAQ states. “However, through our Earth-observing satellites, NASA collects extensive data about Earth’s atmosphere, often in collaboration with the other space agencies of the world. While these data are not specifically collected to identify UAPs or alien technosignatures, they are publicly available and anyone may use them to search the atmosphere.”
The NASA statement also says that if the agency were to learn about UAPs, “it would open up the door to new science questions to explore.”
“Atmospheric scientists, aerospace experts, and other scientists could all contribute to understanding the nature of the phenomenon,” the statement reads. “Exploring the unknown in space is at the heart of who we are.”
It is unclear whether the three hundred UAP sightings referenced by Nelson on Tuesday include reports that have been collected since the delivery of the June 25, 2021 report to the ODNI, or whether he or his agency had received information from other sources that might account for the figures cited.

Former Air Force Officers Share Evidence, Tales Of UFO Encounters: ‘The Truth As We Know It’ ( brobible )
- A group of former United States Air Force officers shared what they say is proof that UFOs have interfered with American nuclear weapons.
- The panel of Air Force officers also discussed their involvement in UFO incidents at nuclear missile launch facilities and test sites during the Cold War era.
This past Tuesday, October 19th, former U.S. Air Force captain and nuclear missile crew commander Robert Salas, former USAF captain and nuclear missile targeting officer Robert Jamison, former USAF captain and nuclear missile crew commander David Schindele, and former USAF lieutenant and missile test photographic officer Robert Jacobs held a press conference at the National Press Club where they presented and discussed evidence that UFOs have tampered with American nuclear weapons.
“Former Air Force officer, Robert Salas, was the on-duty commander of an underground launch control facility assigned to Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, on March 24, 1967,” read a press release published prior to the event.
“He has publicly stated over a span of twenty-five years, that all ten of his ICBMs became inoperable and that eight days earlier, on March 16, 1967, a similar incident occurred at another missile launch control facility.
“Numerous other UFO-related incidents with possible implications for national security have been publicly acknowledged by former public officials — whose efforts resulted in the creation of a secret Pentagon UFO investigations group, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP).“This press conference will present witness testimony and other evidence of a many of such incidents.”

The Debrief, which spoke to Captain Salas prior to the Air Force officers’ media event, covered the press conference and filed a lengthy report as well as an audio interview with Salas.
During Tuesday’s press conference, former USAF captain and nuclear missile targeting officer Robert Jamison told a story about one night in late March 1966. On that night, Jamison had been ordered to the Oscar Flight launch facility, where several of its missiles had somehow been disabled.
“Bob, did you hear what happened?” Jamison recalled being asked when he arrived at the hangar. “The sheriff in Roy, Montana… reported a UFO in the area, told the Air Force, and at the same time ten missiles in Oscar Flight went off alert.”
“To go off alert for no reason, and then have ten missiles to go off alert? This never happened before,” said Jamison.
“Even though I never saw a flying saucer or a UFO, I do know they exist because they knocked down our missiles,” he continued. “That just doesn’t happen every day.”
“They’re very interested in our nuclear weapons, and our methods of delivering nuclear weapons,” Jamison added. “That’s what concerns me. That’s why we’re here today.”
Later in the session, Salas addressed a statement from the recent report delivered to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. That report revealed there were more than 140 instances of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) collected since 2019 by the Navy’s UAP Task Force that “probably do represent physical objects.”
“This is a pretty startling admission by the Department of Defense,” said Salas. “I certainly have never seen anything like this before.”
Former USAF lieutenant and missile test photographic officer Robert Jacobs added a very interesting personal story of his own.
“I was part of a U.S. Air Force coverup for 17 years,” said Jacobs.
“Our duty was to provide coverage for every launch,” Jacobs explained, recounting that many of the missile tests at that time resulted in failures. “Many of the missiles blew up on the pad,” Jacobs explained, noting that engineers wanted to be able to review footage of the tests to aid in troubleshooting problems with the missiles.
Two days after watching and recording a “missile until it went out of sight” Jacobs says he was called to the office of Major Florenze J. Mansmann, then the Chief Science Officer at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
“There were two guys,” Jacobs recalled. “Two men in gray flannel suits,” who joined Jacobs and Mansmann in the room where a film projector had been set up. After Jacobs described what he and his team had observed, he was asked to sit down and watch the footage of the launch.
“The most amazing thing happened,” Jacobs said, as he recalled watching the missile going through its planned stages. “[The missile] was flying along, going about 8000 miles an hour now.”
“Suddenly, from in the frame we saw an object come in from the same way we were going,” Jacobs explained. “This object flew in, it came up to our warhead, it went around the top of the warhead, fired a beam of light down onto the top of the warhead. It went around to the front of the warhead—remember, we’re all traveling at about 8000 miles an hour here—fired another beam of light, went down below the warhead, fired another beam of light. Went around the way it had come in, fired another beam of light, [and] then it flew out of the frame the same way it had come in.”
“At that point, the warhead tumbled out of space, “Jacobs said.
“When asked what the object was, Jacobs told his superior officer that it looked like they had captured a UFO on film. Jacobs was told never to talk about the incident.
“It was shaped like a flying saucer,” Jacobs added. “How could such a thing happen? That thing was up there. I saw it, it was on film.”
“What had happened to me [was] my world changed,” Jacobs remembers. “My worldview changed, but I was under orders to shut up, so I shut up… part of the U.S. Air Force coverup, in fact.”
Former USAF captain and nuclear missile crew commander David Schindele also spoke during the meeting, and issued a scathing indictment of the U.S. government and military when it comes to their handling of UFOs.
“We are all proud of our integrity, and the Air Force relied on us because of it. However, the Air Force has not been honest with Congress, and the American public,” said Schindele.
“The Air Force continues with this proclamation that UFOs do not exist or pose a threat to National security. I was held hostage to both those lies for about 40 years, and it is past time for the truth to come out and be revealed,” he continued.
“Congress and the intelligence community have a responsibility here and others must be released from the burden of holding back the truth.”

During his interview with The Debrief, Salas asked the question that has been on the minds of many over the past several decades: “Will the government tell us the truth about what they’ve known now for decades, almost 70 years or more?”
It seems doubtful, but with people like Salas and Luis “Lue” Elizondo, the former director of the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), and others coming forward with first hand accounts and information we’re getting closer to the truth than ever before.
