Alumna Uses 3-D Printing to Help Guide, Control ‘Asteroid Jumping’ Spacecraft

Poking around under the hood is in Yomary Betancur Vesga’s comfort zone. As an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduate student, she handled all of her own car maintenance herself — a budgetary necessity, she said. Now as a young engineer, newly hired by Collins Aerospace, she is applying her skills far beyond her home garage — namely, in designing a vehicle that can withstand the rigors of space exploration. Her work has required her to create 3-D printed parts, integrate hardware and software, develop algorithms, and then, test, verify and validate her work, all as a part of a project funded by NASA.
Working in the Advanced Dynamic and Control Lab at the John Mica Engineering and Aerospace Innovation Complex (“MicaPlex”), in Embry-Riddle’s Research Park, she has been developing and implementing guidance, navigation and control systems for a six-degree-of-freedom spacecraft. The craft, complete with a camera and drill system, will have the ability to “jump” onto asteroids to collect samples.
Betancur Vesga worked under the mentorship of Dr. Hever Moncayo, associate professor of Aerospace Engineering with expertise in flight dynamics, control, guidance and navigation, with whom she co-authored a paper for the Journal of Aerospace Information Systems. In the lab, Betancur Vesga was responsible for integrating hardware and software for an Extreme Access System (EASY) spacecraft and testing with a device called an Integrated Gravity Offloading Robotic System (IGOR), which is a piece of large equipment cabled to the ceiling, similar to the machinery that moves automobiles through a factory line during manufacturing. This testing apparatus enabled her to subject the test vehicle to high fidelity, partial-gravity simulations.
“We have tried to create a very high-fidelity model. We created components with our 3-D printers using a (kind of plastic), which reduces manufacturing time and cost,” said Betancur Vesga. “After we printed the parts, it was like playing with Lego®, assembling the parts.”
The entire system weighs about 52 pounds. For this phase, weight is not critical, but size matters because these vehicles are being built to explore asteroids with very low gravity as well as areas where a normal rover could not reach. One of the more creative improvisations is the use of compressed air tanks meant for paintball guns to store the fuel used by 24 thrusters, a solution Dr. Moncayo developed on another NASA project.
“Based on what we can demonstrate, we hope to get investors to back a design with a tank that can contain more fuel and more compressed air,” Betancur Vesga said. “Right now, we can do one minute of testing and then we have to take out the tank, charge it and come back.”
In designing a vehicle that allows the test of the control system, the actuators have to be perfect.
“We had to come up with a workable propulsion system and alignment is important, just as it is in a rocket. Each of the small thrusters must be perfectly placed because misalignment angles force you to use more energy when the vehicle compensates during a maneuver,” said Betancur Vesga.
Some misalignment, though, is unavoidable, even in precise manufacturing.
“I have to consider the thrust I get from each of the thrusters and how we compensate for undesired dynamics,” Betancur Vesga added. “That’s critical to protecting the vehicle during exploration missions.”
Her work also addressed the challenge of developing control algorithms so that even if a thruster, actuator or sensor fails, the vehicle can compensate by executing hopping and jumping maneuvers to stabilize the system.
Betancur Vesga was born in Bogota, Colombia, where she earned her Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering from San Buenaventura University in 2015. In Colombia, she interned as a safety analyst in the operations safety department of Avianca Holdings, S.A. Even though she was part of a “family of lawyers,” her father worked with members of the U.S. Air Force on cases and, in turn, she developed an early interest in aerospace. As an undergraduate, she designed experimental rockets and investigated airflow at different accelerations as an undergraduate.
Knowing that she wanted to work for NASA, Betancur Vesga set her sights on studying in the U.S. “Everyone knows Embry-Riddle,” she said. She was admitted to the Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering program in 2017. The intensive English program offered by the Embry-Riddle Language Institute helped her quickly gain the language proficiency she needed to work in the U.S. aerospace industry.
Through an eight-month co-op position with Collins Aerospace, Betancur Vesga worked on Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS). She will be continuing her work as a Collins Aerospace engineer. When she becomes a U.S. citizen, she plans to transition to space-focused projects at Collins but says her safety work “is related, because you have to develop algorithms, implement, test, validate and verify.”
Betancur Vesga is not leaving her lab at the MicaPlex in the rearview mirror. She will continue her studies with Embry-Riddle as a doctoral student.

A sign that aliens could stink

Phosphine is among the stinkiest, most toxic gases on Earth, found in some of the foulest of places, including penguin dung heaps, the depths of swamps and bogs, and even in the bowels of some badgers and fish. This putrid “swamp gas” is also highly flammable and reactive with particles in our atmosphere.
Most life on Earth, specifically all aerobic, oxygen-breathing life, wants nothing to do with phosphine, neither producing it nor relying on it for survival.
Now MIT researchers have found that phosphine is produced by another, less abundant life form: anaerobic organisms, such as bacteria and microbes, that don’t require oxygen to thrive. The team found that phosphine cannot be produced in any other way except by these extreme, oxygen-averse organisms, making phosphine a pure biosignature — a sign of life (at least of a certain kind).
In a paper recently published in the journal Astrobiology, the researchers report that if phosphine were produced in quantities similar to methane on Earth, the gas would generate a signature pattern of light in a planet’s atmosphere. This pattern would be clear enough to detect from as far as 16 light years away by a telescope such as the planned James Webb Space Telescope. If phosphine is detected from a rocky planet, it would be an unmistakable sign of extraterrestrial life.
“Here on Earth, oxygen is a really impressive sign of life,” says lead author Clara Sousa-Silva, a research scientist in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. “But other things besides life make oxygen too. It’s important to consider stranger molecules that might not be made as often, but if you do find them on another planet, there’s only one explanation.”
The paper’s co-authors include Sukrit Ranjan, Janusz Petkowski, Zhuchang Zhan, William Bains, and Sara Seager, the Class of 1941 Professor of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at MIT, as well as Renyu Hu at Caltech.
Giant bellies
Sousa-Silva and her colleagues are assembling a database of fingerprints for molecules that could be potential biosignatures. The team has amassed more than 16,000 candidates, including phosphine. The vast majority of these molecules have yet to be fully characterized, and if scientists were to spot any of them in an exoplanet’s atmosphere, they still wouldn’t know whether the molecules were a sign of life or something else.
But with Sousa-Silva’s new paper, scientists can be confident in the interpretation of at least one molecule: phosphine. The paper’s main conclusion is that, if phosphine is detected in a nearby, rocky planet, that planet must be harboring life of some kind.
The researchers did not come to this conclusion lightly. For the last 10 years, Sousa-Silva has devoted her work to fully characterizing the foul, poisonous gas, first by methodically deciphering phosphine’s properties and how it is chemically distinct from other molecules.
In the 1970s, phosphine was discovered in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn — immensely hot gas giants. Scientists surmised that the molecule was spontaneously thrown together within the bellies of these gas giants and, as Sousa-Silva describes, “violently dredged up by huge, planet-sized convective storms.”
Still, not much was known about phosphine, and Sousa-Silva devoted her graduate work at University College of London to pinning down phosphine’s spectral fingerprint. From her thesis work, she nailed down the exact wavelengths of light that phosphine should absorb, and that would be missing from any atmospheric data if the gas were present.
During her PhD, she began to wonder: Could phosphine be produced not just in the extreme environments of gas giants, but also by life on Earth? At MIT, Sousa-Silva and her colleagues began answering this question.
“So we started collecting every single mention of phosphine being detected anywhere on Earth, and it turns out that anywhere where there’s no oxygen has phosphine, like swamps and marshlands and lake sediments and the farts and intestines of everything,” Sousa-Silva says. “Suddenly this all made sense: It’s a really toxic molecule for anything that likes oxygen. But for life that doesn’t like oxygen, it seems to be a very useful molecule.”
“Nothing else but life”
The realization that phosphine is associated with anaerobic life was a clue that the molecule could be a viable biosignature. But to be sure, the group had to rule out any possibility that phosphine could be produced by anything other than life. To do this, they spent the last several years running many species of  phosphorous, phosphine’s essential building block, through an exhaustive, theoretical analysis of chemical pathways, under increasingly extreme scenarios, to see whether phosphorous could turn into phosphine in any abiotic (meaning non-life-generating) way.
Phosphine is a molecule made from one phosphorous and three hydrogen atoms, which normally do not prefer to come together. It takes enormous amounts of energy, such as in the extreme environments within Jupiter and Saturn, to smash the atoms with enough force to overcome their natural aversion. The researchers worked out the chemical pathways and thermodynamics involved in multiple scenarios on Earth to see if they could produce enough energy to turn phosphorous into phosphine.
“At some point we were looking at increasingly less-plausible mechanisms, like if tectonic plates were rubbing against each other, could you get a plasma spark that generated phosphine? Or if lightning hit somewhere that had phosphorous, or a meteor had a phosphorous content, could it generate an impact to make phosphine? And we went through several years of this process to figure out that nothing else but life makes detectable amounts of phosphine.”
Phosphine, they found, has no significant false positives, meaning any detection of phosphine is a sure sign of life. The researchers then explored whether the molecule could be detectable in an exoplanet’s atmosphere. They simulated the atmospheres of idealized, oxygen-poor, terrestrial exoplanets of two types: hydrogen-rich and carbon dioxide-rich atmospheres. They fed into the simulation different rates of phosphine production and extrapolated what a given atmosphere’s spectrum of light would look like given a certain rate of phosphine production.
They found that if phosphine were produced at relatively small amounts equivalent to the amount of methane produced on Earth today, it would produce a signal in the atmosphere that would be clear enough to be detected by an advanced observatory such as the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, if that planet were within 5 parsecs, or about 16 light years from Earth — a sphere of space that covers a multitude of stars, likely hosting rocky planets.
Sousa-Silva says that, aside from establishing phosphine as a viable biosignature in the search for extraterrestrial life, the group’s results provide a pipeline, or process for researchers to follow in characterizing any other of the other 16,000 biosignature candidates.
“I think the community needs to invest in filtering these candidates down into some kind of priority,” she says. “Even if some of these molecules are really dim beacons, if we can determine that only life can send out that signal, then I feel like that is a goldmine.”

‘It did not obey the laws of physics’: Pilot who spotted famous Tic Tac UFO breaks silence after 15 years

A US fighter pilot whose plane filmed the famous – and still unexplained – “tic tac” UFO footage has spoken for the first time about his close encounter.
Chad Underwood broke 15 years of silence on the subject, describing the object he recorded over the Pacific Ocean as “not behaving within the normal laws of physics”.
He said: “It was going from like 50,000 feet to 100 feet in like seconds, which is not possible.”
The tic tac – so-called because of its rounded shape and white colour – was caught on video as the US Navy attempted to identify a series of objects spotted on radar flying off America’s west coast in November 2004.The authenticity of the film – which was first made public in 2017 – was finally confirmed by the Pentagon earlier this year. Officials said they still had no idea what the recorded object was. Weather phenomenon, manmade craft and birds have all been ruled out.

 

Speaking to the New York Magazine, Mr Underwood said: “The thing that stood out to me the most was how erratic it was behaving. And what I mean by erratic is that its changes in altitude, air speed, and aspect were just unlike things that I’ve ever encountered before flying against other air targets.

“It was just behaving in ways that aren’t physically normal. That’s what caught my eye. Because, aircraft, whether they’re manned or unmanned, still have to obey the laws of physics. They have to have some source of lift, some source of propulsion. The tic tac was not doing that.”
And he added: “You’re up there flying, like, ‘Okay. It’s not behaving in a manner that’s predictable or is normal by how flying objects physically move’.”
The sighting came during a fortnight in which the USS Princeton had noted unknown aircraft intermittently passing across its radar systems off the US west coast. The contact was considered so inexplicable that the system was shut down and restarted to check for bugs — but operators continued to track the mysterious object afterwards.
Then on 14 November, Commander David Fravor was flying a mission off the USS Nimitz when he eyeballed the object. It seemed, he later said, to dive below the water, resurface, and speed out of sight when he approached.
As Fravor landed, he told Underwood – just preparing to take off on his own mission – to be aware of unusual activity.
“Dave Fravor was like, ‘Hey, dude. BOLO,’ like, be on the lookout for just something weird,” Underwood said in his interview published on Thursday. “So, we go out to where our designated training area is. We’re not necessarily looking for something, but the Princeton had a specific object that they wanted us to hunt, for lack of a better word. And all of a sudden, I got this blip on my radar.”
He said he did not see the object with his own eyes because he was focused on capturing video footage for intelligence to analyse later.
But he added: “The thing that was the most interesting to me [was] how erratic this thing was. If it was obeying physics like a normal object that you would encounter in the sky – an aircraft, or a cruise missile, or some sort of special project that the government didn’t tell you about – that would have made more sense to me. The part that drew our attention was how it wasn’t behaving within the normal laws of physics.”
Unusually, he was never fully debriefed on his sighting but had to take a phone call about the incident so soon after landing, he was still in his flight gear at the time.
“Probably within about 20 minutes or so, I spoke to someone that I assume was from NORAD [North American Aerospace Defense Command],” he revealed. “I have no idea like what level up to who I was talking to. I just wanted to answer them. I was just basically handed a telephone and said, ‘Hey, answer these questions’.”
In the 15 years since, he said he has not speculated on what it might have been and had not previously given interviews because he did not want his name “attached to the ‘little green men’ crazies that are out there.”
He added: “I do not want to be part of that community. It is just what we call a UFO. I couldn’t identify it. It was flying. And it was an object. It’s as simple as that. I’ll let the nerds, like, do the math on what it was likely to be. I just happened to be the person that brought back the video.”

El objeto proviene del interior del volcán y tiene unos 200 metros de largo. El ovni emerge del volcán y se mueve lentamente hacia el cielo antes de desaparecer por completo de la vista de la cámara. In January 2015, UFO researcher Linda Moulton-Howe (publisher of the earthfiles.com website) received an unexpected letter from an alleged retired engineer of the US Navy, a former first-class flight officer. The letter that Linda received, recounts the experiences in which the anonymous US NAVY officer (referring to himself as “Brian”) tells about his bizarre and extraordinary experiences of various rescues and flights with planes in Antarctica, which occurred between the years 1983 and 1997. “Brian” claims that he is aware of a collaboration that still exists, between humans and aliens and that Antarctica is an important site and field of research for these incredible collaborations. As mentioned above, the experiences of Brian and his flights in rescue operations and support and research operations on behalf of the US Navy in Antarctica, occurred in the period 1983-1997 and some of these operations included several observations of colored flying saucers silvery, flying over the Transantartic mountains at high speed. He and his crew would also see ancient ruins of an Alien city and a large ice hole about five to ten miles from the geographic South Pole (red circle on the map) and that this geographic area was to be a No Fly Zone, or an area of ​​overflight by USAF and US Navy aircraft. But during an emergency Brian recounts that he entered all the crew of the plane inside the No Fly Zone Aliena and saw what they should not have seen: an entrance of a human-alien scientific research base created under the ice. “Hello Linda, I am a retired aeronautical engineer of the United States Navy, pilot of an LC 130 plane that retired after 20 years of service in 1997. I wanted to write to her after meditating for a long period of time, and here is the my decision to write and tell her my experience on the Antarctic continent, witness of sightings of flying saucers and of which I was told not to speak. I served my country in my 20 years in the navy with a squadron called the Antartic Development Squadron Six or VXE-6 as it was also known. I have operated with this squadron since 1983, then retired in March 1997. Being a flight engineer, I was able to fly for more than 4000 hours in this capacity and saw things that most people cannot even imagine , of what is found on the continent of Antarctica. “The earth seems more alien to us then earthly. Our operations of this frozen land began in late September and ended at the end of February each year until the squadron was decommissioned in 1999. Once we approached the plane at ‘The air sampling Camp’ – the air sampling area – but we had some electrical faults on the aircraft and mysterious anomalies. Then I was told to leave this area immediately and report to our squadron commander as soon as they returned to McMurdo. Needless to say, our pilot (the LC130 pilot commander) was sent away, exonerated from the mission as well as our crew. So all away from the South Pole for over a month. There were other times when we saw things that were out of the ordinary.  In a peripheral field near Marie Byrd Land we left some scientists and their equipment. Always remaining in communication with McMurdo for 2 weeks. Our crew flew back to the camp to find out if the scientists were okay with the supplies and if everything was ok. But strangely we did not find anyone where we had left them and no sign of their presence. The radio was active and I tried calling McMurdo to check that it was working properly. We left the field and returned to McMurdo as ordered by our Commander. A week later, a scientist told Mc Murdo to go back to the camp again to pick them up. Just loaded the team of scientists, everyone was silent, they didn’t talk to the aircraft crew and they looked scared. “” As soon as we landed at McMurdo, the scientists were put on another one of our planes part of the squadron and I took off in flight to Christchurch in New Zealand. We never heard of them again, disappeared completely. Their equipment that we brought back from the camp was quarantined and sent back to the United States, escorted by the same intelligence agents who had questioned us about our flight over the air sampling area where there is precisely the big hole in the ice.
