The Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) seems to be working on bringing a staple of science fiction weaponry — the force field — into reality.

The announcement arrived as part of a new AFRL report on the future of directed energy weapons — you know, lasers and stuff — and how they might be used by the military in the coming decades. The report concedes that developing a missile defense force field will take substantial technological development, but it also opines that directed energy weaponry has reached a “tipping point” of practicality, with a press release sent to The Drive claiming that “the concept of a [directed energy] weapon creating a localized force field may be just on the horizon.”

Not Quite

Unfortunately, when the AFRL talks about force fields, it doesn’t quite mean the laser-like bubbles that the Gungans used against the Trade Federation in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.”

Rather, the military describes a force field as an “umbrella” formed by various directed energy weapons — currently mounted on vehicles but eventually orbiting in space — that zap down any missiles entering a certain radius.

“By 2060 a sufficiently large fleet or constellation of high-altitude [directed energy weapon] systems could provide a missile defense umbrella, as part of a layered defense system, if such concepts prove affordable and necessary,” the report reads.

“By 2060 we can predict that [directed energy] systems will become more effective, and this idea of a force field includes methods to destroy other threats too,” AFRL Directed Energy Deputy Chief Scientist Jermey Murray-Krezan said in the release. “Eventually there may be potential to achieve the penultimate goal of a Nuclear or ballistic missile umbrella. It’s fun to think about what that might be in 2060, but we don’t want to speculate too much.”

Scientists Have Been Searching for Signs of Alien Technology in Our Solar System for A Decade

On the heels of reports from new NASA head Bill Nelson that the space agency will be aiding to identify unidentified aerial objects venturing into U.S. military airspace, Harvard Astronomy Professor Avi Loeb has announced his Galileo Project, with the express goal of hoping to identify alien artifacts either currently loitering in or passing through our solar system. It is an exciting and bold new effort by all accounts, particularly for such an esteemed institution (and one The Debrief will be covering in much more detail); however, it is hardly the first effort of this nature to be undertaken.

“This idea is quite old,” Penn State Astronomer Jason Wright told The Debrief. “It goes back to Ron Bracewell’s ideas in 1960, published just a year after the first radio SETI programs were proposed.”

Wright highlighted the challenge faced by mainstream scientists hoping to venture into this controversial field. “This strain of SETI has not gotten as much attention or funding as other forms like radio SETI, and has acquired quite a giggle factor because of associations with the “Face on Mars” nonsense and Ancient Aliens bunkum.”

Ancient Aliens bunkum notwithstanding, since that 1960 paper by Bracewell, a number of projects both past and present have suggested methods of searching for extraterrestrial artifacts, including on places like the Moon, Mars, and even in Earth’s orbit. Here, The Debrief takes a look at some of those efforts, and how they fit in the overall hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence.

NASA and the Search for Alien Technology

Last December, The Debrief published a story about some mainstream scientists, including those from NASA, who are currently searching for evidence of alien technology, more commonly known as technosignatures.

“Technosignatures refer to any evidence of technology that could be remotely detectable, specifically through the tools of astronomy,” explained Dr. Jacob Haqq-Misra, an astrobiologist and senior research investigator at Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, in an email interview with The Debrief for that story. “Radio signals are one example of a technosignature but not the only one. Other examples are city lights, surface modifications (cities and large-scale deployment of solar panels), changes in the atmosphere (greenhouse gases like CO2 as well as industrial byproducts like CFCs and NO2), free-floating spacecraft, megastructures (i.e, Dyson spheres/swarms), and other possibilities.”

In that same story, The Debrief also highlighted a 2018 workshop by NASA regarding the search for technosignatures and the paper that workshop produced. In short, both the workshop and the paper concluded that the study of possible alien technology was an important component of future NASA missions.

“I do think the subject is becoming more popular and gaining acceptance,” explained Dr. Dawn Gelino, Deputy Director of NASA’s Exoplanet Science Institute and one of the organizers of the TechnoClimes conference, in an email to The Debrief. “I think the scientists looking for technosignatures are organizing and working together a bit better, and being more rigorous in their searches and in publications.”

Since that workshop, NASA has announced a number of missions that could assist this type of research.

“We have James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to be launched this year that could look at the atmospheres of exoplanets,” Dr. Ravi Kopparapu, a researcher from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, told The Debrief. “We also have next generation space telescope mission concept studies like LUVOIR, HabEX, and OST that look at the atmospheres of exoplanets to find signs of life.”

These same tools, Dr. Kopparapu notes, could also be used for identifying technosignatures.

“So the question of what are the most promising methods boils down to what are we going to have access to in the near-term,” Dr. Kopparapu told The Debrief. “And because the above-mentioned telescopes are the ones we will have access to, it makes sense to use those to look for technosignatures.”

 

Bringing the Hunt to Our Solar System

In March, The Debrief covered the efforts by Dr. Kopparapu and Dr. Haqq-Misra, who propose that such technosignatures may be found right in our own astronomical backyard.

“I would even say to look at the near-Earth orbit for any anomalous signature that appears at odds with our expectation or doesn’t fit the known data,” Kopparapu told The Debrief in an email for that story. “Just like we are sending probes (like Voyager and pioneer spacecrafts) beyond our solar system, it is quite possible that other technological civilizations will do the same.”

“We are not unique in that sense,” he added.

As far back as 2012, Haqq-Misra and Kopparapu had co-authored a paper about this very idea, in which they concluded that “the vastness of space, combined with our limited searches to date,” implies that any remote unpiloted exploratory probes of extraterrestrial origin would suggest that alien artifacts, or what they term “lurkers” may be hidden in more mundane space objects like asteroids, or even disguised to appear like ordinary space rocks. To find such objects, they proposed methods such as blasting suspect objects with radio signals to measure the reflected data, monitoring them for any unexplained changes in velocity, or simply listening to see if they are emitting any transmissions all on their own.

“Maybe albedo differences (reflected light from the surfaces of objects on asteroids and see if they are consistent with the light reflected from the asteroid itself) is another method,” Kopparapu told The Debrief, offering yet another potential approach for locating such hidden alien objects.

In his email to The Debrief, Penn State’s Wright offered support for the duo’s approach, with one caveat. “It’s certainly possible [such local alien artifacts exist]: our census of probe-sized objects in the Solar System is very very incomplete because space is so big. Upcoming projects like VRO will be very good at finding many more such objects, but even when they are seen, it’s not clear that we’d recognize them as artificial and not, say, asteroids.”

Analyzing Existing Databases of Maps and Images

In 2013, physicist Paul Davies, who authored the book “The Eerie Silence: Are We Alone in the Universe?published a paper titled, “Searching for Alien Artifacts on the Moon.” In that paper, Davies suggested that scientists comb through the database of searchable images captured during the many decades of space studies, particularly those captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, in hopes of spotting something on the moon’s surface or other local environments that doesn’t appear natural in origin.

“The Moon is almost inert, and so objects and features on the surface are preserved for an immense duration,” Davies told The Debrief for that story. “Eventually, the material thrown up by meteor impacts erases records, but a large object on the Moon might remain detectable for tens of millions of years.”

Haqq-Misra made a similar observation, pointing out that the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has a similar set of high-resolution images ripe to be studied in this manner. “There are thousands of such images,” he told The Debrief, “and so it is possible that an anomalous artifact could be captured in such images without anybody noticing yet.”

That Debrief story also highlighted a similar idea outlined in a 2020 paper, which proposed using unsupervised distributed machine learning systems to look for such surface anomalies. “This approach could conceivably detect artifacts on the surface of the Moon that would not have been easily noticed by naked eye analysis,” explains Dr. Haqq-Misra.

As it turns out, one effort of this particular type was already undertaken in 2016 by The Lunascan Project and Society for Planetary SETI Research, using those exact Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images. And according to the study’s results, two unusual features were spotted within the crater Paracelsus C (which sits on the far side of the moon) that they believe may be “an entrance or passageway that may lead underground.”

To make this determination, researchers created 3D renderings of the suggested alien features and found that one of the two suspect structures is not only statistically different from the surrounding lunar landscape but was “unlike any feature shown on the moon to date.” Unfortunately for the Lunascan team, their research and its compelling results ran into the same barrier much of this type of research ultimately encounters.

“A decidedly conservative mainstream scientific establishment often rejects anomalies based on subject matter alone, i.e., there cannot be alien artifacts on the Moon because there are no alien artifacts on the Moon (or other planets),” the researchers note in the paper. “Such a view is an example of circular reasoning, based on the belief that extraterrestrials do not exist, or if they do exist, that they could not have traveled to our solar system.”

This issue was confirmed in an email to The Debrief by the lead author of the study, Dr. Mark J. Carlotto, an electrical engineer and senior scientist at General Dynamics, who said, “Our analysis has been ignored by the planetary science community.”

Alien Mining Operations

Another suggested method for searching for extraterrestrial technology in our local environment includes looking for evidence of past, massive-scale alien mining operations.

It’s an idea proposed by physicists Dr. Duncan Forgan from the University of Edinburg and Dr. Martin Elvis from Harvard University in their 2011 paper, which was published in the Journal of Earth and Planetary Astrophysics.

“Considering the detected disc of debris around Vega as a template,” the study states, “we explore the observational signatures of targeted asteroid mining (TAM), such as unexplained deficits in chemical species, changes in the size distribution of debris, and other thermal signatures which may be detectable in the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a debris disc.”

Like other proposed efforts, their paper recommends using telescopes and light spectra data to look for the artifacts of such mining efforts, which may still exist in places like the Solar System’s Kuiper Belt, or maybe even in the rings of Saturn.

The Future of the Technosignature Hunt

With these and other proposed methods on the horizon, scientists agree that even a project as ambitious as Galileo shouldn’t mean that traditional efforts in this arena be abandoned.

“Radio searches (like SETI) can—and should—continue,” Dr. Kopparapu told The Debrief. “If we do detect a radio signal that is confirmed to be not-natural, and not-from Earth, then things get interesting.”

Fortunately, even though the stigma of UFOs and Ancient Aliens may still cast a shadow over mainstream efforts to search for technosignatures, those already involved in this steadily growing field like to emphasize the historically critical role of first scientists in looking for answers to the unknown.

“In the same way that scientists searched for exoplanets before there was sufficient proof of them, I think scientists searching for technosignatures are brave,” Dr. Gelino told The Debrief. “They are sometimes staking their established scientific careers and reputations on looking for something they believe is there.”

All of the proposed efforts seem at least worthwhile to consider, and simple curiosity is undoubtedly crucial to scientific exploration. However, as Dr. Gelino also notes, it is often scientists’ personal hopes and aspirations that fuel their hunt for the truth.

“I would love to one day have proof to validate my belief that Earth is not the only planet in the Universe that holds intelligent life,” she told The Debrief. “My dream is to have an unambiguous answer to humanity’s age-old question: ‘Are we alone?’”

Astronomers seek evidence of tech built by aliens ( France24 )

An international team of scientists led by a prominent Harvard astronomer announced a new initiative Monday to look for evidence of technology built by extraterrestrial civilizations.

Called the Galileo Project, it envisages the creation of a global network of medium-sized telescopes, cameras and computers to investigate unidentified flying objects, and has so far been funded with $1.75 million from private donors.

Given recent research showing the prevalence of Earth-like planets throughout the galaxy, "We can no longer ignore the possibility that technological civilizations predated us," Professor Avi Loeb told reporters at a news conference.

"The impact of any discovery of extraterrestrial technology on science, our technology, and on our entire world view, would be enormous," he added in a statement.

The project includes researchers from Harvard, Princeton, Cambridge, Caltech and the University of Stockholm.

It was announced a month after the Pentagon released a report about unidentified aerial phenomena, which stated that their nature was unclear.

"What we see in our sky is not something that politicians or military personnel should interpret, because they were not trained as scientists, it's for the science community to figure out," said Loeb, adding that he hoped to increase the project's funding tenfold.

Apart from studying UFOs, the Galileo Project wants to investigate objects that visit our solar system from interstellar space, and searching for alien satellites that might be probing Earth.

Loeb refers to such research as a new branch of astronomy he calls "space archaeology," intended to complement the existing field of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), which mainly probes for alien radio signals.

These endeavors will require collaborations with existing and future astronomical surveys, including from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile that is due to go online in 2023 and is eagerly awaited by the scientific community.

The 59-year-old Israeli-American has published hundreds of pioneering papers and collaborated with the late Stephen Hawking, but created controversy when he suggested an interstellar object that briefly visited our system in 2017 could have been an alien probe sailing on solar winds.

He laid out his arguments in scientific papers and the book "Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth," which placed him at odds with many in the astronomy community.

The new project is accordingly named after Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, who was punished when he provided key evidence for the Earth not being at the center of the universe.

The project's co-founder Frank Laukien, a visiting scholar at Harvard's chemistry and chemical biology department, declared himself the "resident skeptic."

But he said that, rather than dismissing the ideas outright, it was necessary to "agnostically record and interpret the data according to the scientific method."

Time for Japan to get real on UFO intelligence sharing ( NIKKEI ASIA )

 

With humans likely the threat, Tokyo needs to lend its eyes on the sky

 

TOKYO -- Gone are the days when UFO stories were dismissed as crackpot pseudoscience. Today, they are an emerging field of public policy debate.

A recent U.S. report on unidentified flying objects, or what the intelligence community calls unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), has brought these mysterious sightings into the realm of serious discussion on national security.

The world's powers need to take note. Japan and European allies of the U.S. should work on sharing information on UAP to learn more about them and assess potential security risks.

The report released on June 25 by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence examines 144 incidents of UAP gathered since 2004, mainly by the U.S. military. Most of them are from the past two years.

For many readers, the nine-page document raised more questions than it answered. Of the 144 reported UAP sightings, the Pentagon task force that examined the episodes could offer a reasonable explanation for only one case, identified as "a large, deflating balloon." The rest remain unexplained.

In 18 incidents, unusual UAP movement patterns or flight characteristics were observed. "Some UAP appeared to remain stationary in winds aloft, move against the wind, maneuver abruptly, or move at considerable speed, without discernible means of propulsion," according to the report. There are also 11 reports of near misses between the observing aircraft and a UAP.

The report is based on the work of the Department of Defense's Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force, set up in August 2020 in response to a flurry of UAP sightings in recent years. At a glance, the document seems to be a feast for UFO believers and conspiracy theorists. But far from being that, it reflects the growing interest in these phenomena among U.S. policymakers.

After the release of the report, some U.S. lawmakers and security experts called for redoubled efforts to determine the truth behind UAP. "The United States must be able to understand and mitigate threats" posed by UAP, said Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia who serves as chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida concurred, saying, "The Defense Department and intelligence community have a lot of work to do before we can actually understand whether these aerial threats present a serious national security concern."

The Pentagon is willing to respond to such calls. In late June, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks directed the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security to develop a plan to formalize the UAP task force's activities.

A U.S. security expert with knowledge of discussions on this topic in the Biden administration said civilian and military officials are primarily worried that some aerial sightings may be linked to foreign countries or groups hostile to the U.S.

This is a more palpable threat than invading aliens. Even if intelligent life exists elsewhere in the vast universe, the sheer distances involved make it unlikely that such beings are visiting Earth at anywhere near the pace of reported UAP sightings.

Professor Hitoshi Murayama, a well-known theoretical particle physicist teaching at the University of California, Berkley, explained.

"Any planet with an environment similar to that of Earth is thought to be at least about four light years away from us," Murayama said.

"Shuttling between such a planet and Earth would take an incredibly long time even with extremely sophisticated technology," he said. "If extraterrestrial visitors are involved [in any of the UAP], it is hard to understand how they travel to the Earth so frequently."

Existing earthly spaceships would take about 30,000 years to travel to a planet four light years away. Even for civilizations with far more advanced technology, the distance would be a daunting hurdle. These scientific assumptions support the view that UAP are human in origin. If so, at least some of the sightings may involve unknown highly advanced technology from countries like Russia or China, possibly representing a serious security threat to the U.S.

Multiple military experts warn that objects capable of the otherworldly flight characteristics reported in some UAP were used for military purposes, intercepting or tracking them with existing weapons systems would be next to impossible. Some UAP reports by the U.S. forces exhibit high-level stealth capabilities that defy radar detection.

The report mentions the possibility of "technologies deployed by China, Russia, another nation, or a nongovernmental entity." But it admits there is no solid evidence to support such claims.

The report also suggests some UAP observations could be attributable to classified programs undertaken by the U.S. government or industry. If this is the case, however, such programs have been going on without the knowledge of top U.S. intelligence and defense officials.

The report does not necessarily rule out the involvement of alien visitors. Christopher Mellon, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence during the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, argued for taking the alien theory seriously in a blog post on the UAP report.

"In my view, the UAP report's findings strengthen the case for the alien hypothesis by undermining the main alternatives and providing examples of capabilities we cannot emulate or even understand," Mellon said.

The topic should also raise security red flags for Japan and other U.S. allies that depend on the American military for their defense. Any technology unknown to the U.S. that defies responses by its military, whether human or extraterrestrial in origin, could pose a serious potential threat.

Closer cooperation between the U.S. and its allies on sharing and studying UAP sightings is essential. Most of the 144 UAP episodes covered by the report occurred in or around U.S. airspace.

If a foreign state or group is developing advanced weapons, chances are it will conduct more tests in other parts of the world rather than risk exposing its work to the Americans. If Russia or China were involved, Japan might be in a better geographical position than the U.S. to gather information about the technology.

Japan is beginning to take a minimum response to the challenge. Last September, one month after the U.S. set up the UAP task force, then Defense Secretary Taro Kono issued an unusual order to the Self-Defense Forces to take visual records and analyze such sightings.

During his meeting last summer with then-U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Kono raised the topic and agreed with the Pentagon chief to share information.

Traveling to space has become a thing among the world's multibillionaires. This month, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson rode into space aboard a rocket he helped fund, followed less than two weeks later by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos.

But humans know only a sliver of the vast universe. While lawmakers and news media should still never feed wild alien conspiracy theories, the U.S. report has spelled the end of the taboo on discussing UFOs in the public policy sphere.

Il Progetto Galileo supporta la ricerca non solo della vita extraterrestre stessa, ma anche di prove di civiltà avanzate che potrebbero lasciarsi dietro indizi attraverso la tecnologia che hanno creato, “briciole di pane” note come tecnofirme.

Data l’abbondanza recentemente scoperta di esopianeti in zone abitabili, con potenziale per la vita extraterrestre, il Progetto Galileo è dedicato alla prospettiva in base alla quale gli esseri umani non possono più ignorare la possibile esistenza di ETC,” ha affermato Loeb nella dichiarazione. “La scienza non dovrebbe rifiutare potenziali spiegazioni extraterrestri a causa dello stigma sociale o delle preferenze culturali che non favoriscono il metodo scientifico di un’indagine empirica imparziale. Ora dobbiamo ‘osare guardare attraverso nuovi telescopi’, sia letteralmente che figurativamente“.

La Terra non è estranea ai “visitatori extraterrestri”: secondo un rapporto dell’Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) consegnato al Congresso il 25 giugno, una serie di fenomeni aerei non identificati (UAP) – di natura sconosciuta – sono stati segnalati principalmente dal personale della Marina attraverso più mezzi, incluso il radar e l’osservazione visiva.

Con un progetto così potenzialmente di vasta portata in termini di progresso scientifico ed esplorazione dell’universo, è importante stabilire alcune regole di base fin dall’inizio, ha affermato Laukien in conferenza stampa: “È molto importante tenere a mente che il progetto Galileo non è per tutto, e non è per tutti“, “ha un ambito definito e ha dei limiti“.

L’impresa prenderà in considerazione solo spiegazioni fisiche note e analizzerà i dati raccolti nell’ambito del Progetto Galileo. Non tenterà di speculare su precedenti UAP, presunte osservazioni o rapporti informali, hanno affermato i ricercatori nella dichiarazione.
Possiamo forse dedurre la natura di questi oggetti non identificati. Potrebbe essere un fenomeno atmosferico o qualche altra origine che ha una spiegazione banale, ma vogliamo capirlo,” ha detto Loeb in conferenza stampa. “Vogliamo dissipare la nebbia attraverso un’analisi trasparente e scientifica assemblando i nostri dati, non dati basati su sensori di proprietà del governo, perché la maggior parte di quei dati è secretata“.

I ricercatori sperano di fare luce sui fenomeni extraterrestri seguendo tre principali vie di ricerca: ottenere immagini ad alta risoluzione di UAP utilizzando più rivelatori per scoprirne la natura, condurre ricerche approfondite su oggetti interstellari e cercare potenziali satelliti ETC.

Dopo essersi assicurati dei fondi, il team ha intenzione di partire con slancio: “Abbiamo riunioni su base settimanale e stiamo attualmente selezionando gli strumenti che prevediamo di acquistare,” ha affermato Loeb. “Speriamo di ottenere risultati interessanti nel prossimo anno“.

Attualmente, il progetto mira a creare decine di sistemi di telescopi in tutto il mondo: ognuno sarà composto da circa due telescopi da 10 pollici (25 centimetri) con una fotocamera adatta a catturare oggetti di interesse, collegati a un sistema informatico che filtrerà i dati, ha precisato Loeb. Il team lavorerà anche per sviluppare un software che analizzerà i dati raccolti dal Vera Rubin Observatory che dovrebbe essere operativo nel 2023.

Il Progetto Galileo è stato paragonato al lavoro dell’astronomo italiano Galileo Galilei, le cui scoperte rivoluzionarie hanno cambiato la visione dell’umanità nei confronti dell’universo.
L’importanza delle potenziali scoperte di prove scientifiche rigorosamente convalidate della tecnologia extraterrestre potrebbe essere simile nell’impatto sull’astronomia e sulla nostra visione del mondo come è stato l’uso pionieristico dei telescopi per le osservazioni astronomiche da parte di Galileo,” hanno affermato i membri del progetto Galileo sul sito web del progetto.

Harvard va a caccia di prove lasciate dagli alieni

A fondare e guidare il Progetto Galileo è l’astrofisico di Harvard Avi Loeb accompagnato da Frank Laukien, presidente e Ceo della Bruker Corp., una società con sede in Massachusetts che sviluppa e produce apparecchiature scientifiche. Il progetto prende le mosse dalla convinzione di Avi Loeb che l’asteroide interstellare a forma di sigaro Oumuamua che nel 2017 ha attraversato il nostro sistema solare possa essere parte di una tecnologia aliena.

“Il Progetto Galileo – come dichiarato nella presentazione ufficiale –  si basa sul fatto che gli esseri umani non possono più ignorare la possibile esistenza di civiltà tecnologiche extraterrestri (ETC) e che la scienza non dovrebbe rifiutare dogmaticamente potenziali spiegazioni extraterrestri a causa dello stigma sociale o preferenze culturali, fattori che non sono favorevoli al metodo scientifico di indagine empirica imparziale. Il Progetto Galileo che mira a utilizzare una rete di telescopi terrestri per cercare oggetti interstellari che potrebbero essere di natura extraterrestre è al momento sostenuto da quattro filantropi (nel futuro potrebbero aggiungersene altri) e può contare ad oggi 1,75 milioni di dollari. Il gruppo cercherà potenziali navi aliene nell’orbita terrestre, così come veicoli volanti non identificati, ovvero Ufo, nella nostra atmosfera.
