Inutile affannarsi: i posti per la nuova “Star Trek Cruise” sono esauriti da tempo, lasciando a terrae delusi altre migliaia di altri fans del più celebre e seguito telefilm di sempre. Gli organizzatori se lo aspettavano: “Star Trek Voyager”, la settima serie, quella con il capitano Kathryn Janeway, ha celebrato i 50 anni. Ma invece di celebrare la ricorrenza con un viaggio spaziale, la scelta è caduta su una più rilassante e godereccia crociera ai Caraibi, dall’1 all’8 marzo prossimi.

A disposizione dei terrestri, tutti abbigliati con l’infinita galleria di mostri alieni che hanno costellato gli episodi, la “Explorer of the Sea”, una delle navi più lussuose dalle “Royal Carribean”, che partirà da Miami per toccare la Repubblica Dominicana, Porto Rico, le Isole Vergini e le Bahamas.

A bordo, tutto sarà ispirato a quella che è considerata una delle serie più popolari nella storia delle televisione, vincitrice di 33 Emmy e un Oscar, nata nel 1966 su idea di Gene Roddenberry. Per i pochi umani che non lo sapessero, racconta le vicende di un equipaggio della “Federazione dei Pianeti Uniti” in esplorazione nel cosmo “alla ricerca di nuove forme di vita e di civiltà, fino ad arrivare là dove nessun uomo è mai giunto prima”.

Ma la vera chicca della crociera è la presenza di Kate Mulgrew, l’attrice che nel 1995 impersonava il capitano Janeway, insieme a Robert Picardo, il Dottore, ed Ethan Phillips, Neelix il talassiano.

A intrattenere gli ospiti giochi, serate, feste a tema, party e immancabili maratone in cui assistere a tutte le serie di Star Trek.

NASA Working to Fix Voyager 2 From 11.5 Billion Miles Away

NASA’s twin Voyager probes have been on a mission of exploration for decades, and they’ve performed admirably. Both probes have now left the solar system, providing the first direct measurements of the universe outside our little corner of it. Keeping a 42-year-old space probe working is no simple feat, though. Engineers are working to restore normal operations on Voyager 2 after automated fault protection routines shut off the probe’s science instruments. 
While Voyager 2 was the first of the two probes to leave Earth back in 1977, it took a more roundabout course out of the solar system. It remains the only spacecraft to visit both Saturn and Neptune, which kept it from reaching the interstellar medium until 2018. Voyager 1, on the other hand, left the solar system back in 2012. 
The first sign of trouble came on January 25th when the spacecraft failed to execute a planned maneuver to calibrate its magnetic field instrument. Voyager 2 remained in contact with Earth, but its science instruments shut off after the failed maneuver. After studying the probe’s telemetry, the team determined that the missed spin left two high-power systems operating at the same time. That state would call for more power than the probe had, so the fault protection kicked in to turn off non-essential systems.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) equipped Voyager 2 with a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) for power as it’s too far from the sun for solar panels to be effective. This type of power source, the same used on the Curiosity Mars rover, provides a constant supply of power, but its potency drops a bit every year as the plutonium fuel decays. Engineers have slowly ratcheted down the probe’s power requirements over the years. For example, they disabled the heater on the cosmic ray subsystem instrument to save power. That instrument has continued to operate, though. 
With a full understanding of the issue, JPL staff were able to reactivate the science suite yesterday (January 28th) by flipping off one of the high-power subsystems. The team is currently working to restore normal operations, but that will take some time. This is a machine from the 1970s after all, and it’s 11.5 billion miles away. Each command takes 17 hours to reach Voyager 2, and the confirmation takes 17 hours to come back. So, that’s almost a day and a half just to find out if a command did what it was supposed to do. Despite the difficulties, the Voyager probes remain vital tools in our study of deep space.

A quiet place – Un posto tranquillo è un thriller del 2018, candidato agli Oscar per il miglior montaggio sonoro e che vede come protagonista Emily Blunt, un’attrice ormai conosciuta ai più non solo per aver interpretato Mary Poppins, ma anche per aver recitato in film come Sicario e La ragazza del treno.
A quiet place è diretto e interpretato da John Krasinski ed è un film che negli Stati Uniti è stato vietato ai minori di 13 anni non accompagnati da adulti per la presenza di immagini forti.

Paramount Pictures ha annunciato che il film avrà un seguito, prevista per il 20 marzo 2020.

La terra non è più l’oasi felice di una volta, si è trasformata in un territorio post-apocalittico ricco di predatori extraterrestri. Sono creature cieche ed estremamente veloci che attaccano qualsiasi cosa che produca il minimo rumore, poiché dispongono di un forte senso dell’udito.
La popolazione mondiale, a causa di queste creature, è state decimata. Le città sono in preda a un silenzio assordante e la famiglia Abbott è costretta a sopravvivere nel silenzio.
Evelyn è sposata con Lee, i due hanno avuto tre figli: Regan, che ha un disturbo congenito dell’udito, Marcus e Beau. Purtroppo, l’ultimogenito muore ed Evelyn, abituata ormai a questa vita, viene completamente stravolta dall’evento.
Tutti in famiglia avvertono il senso di colpa per quella scomparsa, i legami iniziano a deteriorarsi, ma rimane comunque la paura del rumore e continua a vigere la legge del silenzio.
Passa un anno ed Evelyn è di nuovo incinta. Il marito, un uomo amorevole che cerca sempre di tutelare la sua famiglia, mentre torna da una battuta di caccia con il figlio nota le luci rosse lampeggiare dalla fattoria: chiaro il messaggio d’allarme mandato dalla moglie.

NASA Warp Drive Starship Enterprise

IXS Enterprise is a conceptual interstellar superluminal spacecraft designed by NASA scientist Dr. Harold G. White, revealed at SpaceVision 2008, designed for the goal of achieving warp travel. The conceptual spacecraft would make use of a modified version of the Alcubierre drive. Dr. White is currently running the White–Juday warp-field interferometer experiment in order to develop a proof of concept for Alcubierre-style warp travel, if possible. The Alcubierre drive uses exotic matter (not to be confused with antimatter) to travel faster than light. While the concept had been out since 2008 the design of IXS Enterprise was popularized in June 2015 after a series of media outlets reported on the conceptual artwork done by Dutch artist Mark Rademaker in collaboration with NASA. The energy required to power the warp drive, according to White, is approximately the negative (negative energy is required for the Alcubierre drive concept to function) mass–energy equivalence of Voyager 1, which has a mass of approximately 700 kilograms. Using E=mc2, -700 kilograms of mass is equivalent to ~-63 exajoules of energy (this number is not definitive and can be further reduced). The ship has two thick outer rings (to reduce required energy) that generate the warp field—a contraction of space ahead, and expansion of space behind it. The space inside the rings is optimized to fit more space for cargo, crew and equipment.

There’s a wind that emanates from the Sun. It blows not like a soft whistle but like a hurricane’s scream. Made of electrons, protons and heavier ions, the solar wind courses through the solar system at roughly 1 million mph (1.6 million kph), barreling over everything in its path. Yet through the wind’s roar, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe hears the small chirps, squeaks and rustles that hint at the origin of this mysterious and ever-present wind. The spacecraft’s FIELDS instrument can eavesdrop on the electric and magnetic fluctuations caused by plasma waves. The Parker Solar Probe it can “hear” when the waves and particles interact with one another, recording frequency and amplitude information about these plasma waves that scientists could then play as sound waves.
