Learn new things: Go back to school

Adults who love to learn new things might really enjoy going back to school (no homework) at Quinebaug Valley Community College’s Spring 2020 LIR program.

As described in the QVCC LIR Spring catalog, it all sounds like a perfectly delicious banquet of courses.

The “appetizer,” an Open House, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at QVCC in Danielson. It features Martin Podskoch, author of “Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut” with its information on historic and other special Connecticut sites you probably should know about and/or perhaps may want to visit in each of Connecticut’s 169 towns. Seating at the Open House is limited to 200.

The main course, individual LIR courses which will be held during the next few months include several that focus on the heritage and ethnicities of Eastern Connecticut. Others discuss interesting travel opportunities, history of the region, subjects of local interest and a myriad of the unusual such as the presentation about UFO sightings to be presented by the state director of the Connecticut Chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (Mufon.)
I’m looking forward to hearing from Christopher Wigren about the content of his new award winning book “Connecticut Architecture: Stories of 100 Places.” I’m told the book includes a number of structures in Connecticut’s Quiet Corner.

Or how about a talk “You Can’t Blame it All on the Sun” with dermatologist Dr. Timothy Monahan whom I continue to thank every day for saving my nose when cancer was discovered. That old belief that it was wise to place very young children out in the sun each day was probably not the best advice after all. (Moms get blamed for so many things.)

For dessert, I recommend the field trip on May 13 to the New Britain Museum of Connecticut where this year, the 100th anniversary of women given the right to vote, the museum is featuring great paintings by women artists.
