Nonostante tutti i contro, l'elevata ricompensa potrebbe indurre molti volontari a farsi avanti.

NASA's tiny glowing plane shows the future of flight in fluorescent oil

nasa-oil-plane

NASA built a toy-sized model of a hybrid wing plane, coated it in fluorescent oil, and put it in an ultra-fast wind tunnel. Why? Because it's a federally funded center housing some of the world's brightest minds, and that's the kind of thing it gets to do.
This image shows a 5.8 percent scale model of one of NASA's plane prototypes coated with a glow-in-the-dark liquid before being blasted with air. The patterns the liquid takes informs scientists of the plane's profiles of lift and drag, and shows how efficient a flight it's capable of.
NASA has been particularly focused on that flight efficiency in recent years. They've partnered with companies such as Boeing to create new aeronautic designs that aim to make long-haul flying cheaper and more comfortable. The fact that they've produced a mesmerizing, psychedelic image in the process is just a bonus on the way to faster, easier air travel.

NASA Preparing to Launch 3-D Printer Into Space

NASA is preparing to launch a 3-D printer into space next year, a toaster-sized game changer that greatly reduces the need for astronauts to load up with every tool, spare part or supply they might ever need.
The printers would serve as a flying factory of infinite designs, creating objects by extruding layer upon layer of plastic from long strands coiled around large spools. Doctors use them to make replacement joints and artists use them to build exquisite jewelry.
In NASA labs, engineers are 3-D printing small satellites that could shoot out of the Space Station and transmit data to earth, as well as replacement parts and rocket pieces that can survive extreme temperatures.
"Any time we realize we can 3-D print something in space, it's like Christmas," said inventor Andrew Filo, who is consulting with NASA on the project. "You can get rid of concepts like rationing, scarce or irreplaceable."
The spools of plastic could eventually replace racks of extra instruments and hardware, although the upcoming mission is just a demonstration printing job.
"If you want to be adaptable, you have to be able to design and manufacture on the fly, and that's where 3-D printing in space comes in," said Dave Korsmeyer, director of engineering at NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, about 35 miles south of San Francisco.
For the first 3-D printer in space test slated for fall 2014, NASA had more than a dozen machines to choose from, ranging from $300 desktop models to $500,000 warehouse builders.
All of them, however, were built for use on Earth, and space travel presented challenges, from the loads and vibrations of launch to the stresses of working in orbit, including microgravity, differing air pressures, limited power and variable temperatures.
As a result, NASA hired Silicon Valley startup Made In Space to build something entirely new.
"Imagine an astronaut needing to make a life-or-death repair on the International Space Station," said Aaron Kemmer, CEO of Made in Space. "Rather than hoping that the necessary parts and tools are on the station already, what if the parts could be 3-D printed when they needed them?"
When staffing his start up in 2010, Kemmer and his partners warned engineers there would be ups and downs — nauseating ones. In more than a dozen flights in NASA's "vomit comet" reduced-gravity aircraft, Made In Space scientists tested printer after printer.
Last week at their headquarters on NASA's campus, Made In Space engineers in lab coats and hair nets tinkered with a sealed 3-D printer in a dust free cleanroom, preparing the models for further pre-launch tests.
As proof of its utility, the team revisited the notorious 1970 moon-bound Apollo 13 breakdown, when astronauts were forced to jerry-rig a lifesaving carbon dioxide filter holder with a plastic bag, a manual cover and duct tape. A 3-D printer could have solved the problem in minutes.
"Safety has been one of our biggest concerns," said strategic officer Michael Chen. Sparks, breakages and electric surges can have grave consequences in the space station. "But when we get it right, we believe these are the only way to manifest living in space," he said.
Space-bound printers will also, eventually, need to capture gasses emitted from the extruded plastics, be able to print their own parts for self-repairs and have some abilities to recycle printed products into new ones.

MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) – A 15-meter (approximately 50 feet) asteroid, similar to the one that exploded above Russia in February, was detected hours before it narrowly missed the Earth over the weekend, Russian scientists said.
Vladimir Lipunov of the Moscow State University and the Sternberg Astronomical Institute said on Sunday a network of telescopes operated by his team recorded a celestial body approaching the planet.
"[The asteroid] was discovered on Friday night by our station near Lake Baikal and nine hours later it flew within 11,300 kilometers of the Earth surface, below the orbit of geostationary satellites. It was about 15 meters in size,” he said.
The scientists originally thought that it could be a man-made object, such as a spent rocket booster, but rejected the idea when they couldn’t find a match in the space junk catalogue. Lipunov said his team had notified the International Astronomical Union of their discovery, but it is yet to be confirmed.

Terra a sinistra e Marte a destra

Rosetta navigation camera (NAVCAM) 24 febbraio 07

UFO SIGHTING A UFO APPEARS AS PLANE LOWERS LANDING GEAR SEPTEMBER 2013

Ufo Sighting filmed in September 2013. As a plane was dropping it's landing gear a Ufo flies up next to it from the planes undercarriage. The object keeps pace with the airliner for a few seconds. The Ufo goes back underneath the plane, it can be seen going around and over the cockpit area of the plane at the end of the sighting. The person who sent us this tape said that he was filming planes coming in for landings. He said he did not notice anything unusual until he watch this Ufo sighting on a bigger screen at his home. The Ufo came and went very fast, at the time of the event the person taping this sighting also added that, he could not see the Ufo with his naked eye through his small camera screen. Could this sighting be a bird, debris, an experimental government drone? As always, you decide! Thank you for watching.

I get a sense or a "knowing" when they are around... its hard to explain... When I get that feeling I know they want to meet with me and that's when I go outside and wait for the impulse of where I have to go to meet them. They come from the star Mirach which is situated in the constellation of Andromeda. Their planet is called Anstria and is 197 light years away. They said we are related to them genetically which is why we look like them. They are here on a scientific mission as are other extraterrestrial civilizations. UFO? STRANGE LIGHTS, MILITARY BEHIND IT ACCORDING TO TV STATION INVESTIGATION.

KIMA looked into it and found out a lot of you were also getting in touch with the UFO Center. Calls came in from Yakima, Zillah, Toppenish and Sunnyside.

We got some answers from the Yakima Training Center. The center says the lights were coming from some military exercises.

"There were a lot of people, the whole block was outside and lined up you know. At first everyone was like, kind of had the same reaction, 'oh no way it's this, that'", said JR who watched the whole event.

The Yakima Training Center says the lights were either coming from illumination rounds or military beacons that can reflect light when it's foggy. - KIMA.

New stunning footage of a UFO that appears to be observing the activity inside the Minneapolis target fields which are fully lighted up at night time. The witness at first thought it was a star! Until it started moving it fairly changed his mind. This mysterious object is very high in the skies to be any toy, and its movements are not those of lanterns, Its colour is white and it at the start is very stationary..

I was right at the top of the hill going down towards my house when I noticed at the horizon a formation of lights (ref: Sept. 22, 2013 video where a ship is burning, just like that formation). I saw two of the lights turned on, the others were already visible. They were spaced out the size of a football field. I could not stop in the middle of the road, so I got home and went up the stairs to the roof, but they were not visible, I have been living in the same house for 26 years so these lights are not familiar in any way.

This UFO was one of three that we filmed between 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM in the far Southwest skies. We were attracted to what at first appeared to be a distant star because of its rapid, bumble-bee motion. Videotaped on a fixed tripod with a manually focused Canon camcorder with an 88x zoom, this footage demonstrates fantastic changes in shape and color that take your breath away. This is one of the things they do to recognise a fake plane. They often have a "passengers light stroke" also called "tell-tell white streak.
I have another video where it's flying on it's side with the passenger lights down at the bottom. Also the 3 Orbs you see on the tail and the amber color it has is a give-away.
I know these fake planes are not really accepted by a lot of people,
but believe me, it's as real (or as fake) as it can get? These crafts are made out of plasma and change their light configuration in a wrong way and most of all they make it look like it's an optical illusion that you see but always push it a bit over the edge ...
I hope people will try to learn and understand more about these so called "fake planes". They're turning up in huge numbers, all around the world.

Ok this is something my dad brother and me saw a few years ago and for some reason I've been thinking a lot of it lately and just want to know if there's a explanation. We were doing work on a house I had just gotten done welding some pipe and I looked up straight up and there was this rectangle high in the sky it looked just like a parachute but it was multiple colors there was purple blue white I said something to my dad who was standing right beside me and he saw it as well there for a minute or two we were trying to figure out what it was because we quickly realized it wasn't a parachute it was WAY to high to be a parachute and it wasn't descending but staying at the same elevation and slowly traveling across the sky I don't remember if it turned or went straight after a few minutes our necks were killing us and we had work to be done.

NASA: This is what the Earth will look like in 2099

NASA has just put out a time-lapse video showing how the changing climate is expected to impact our world between now and 2099.
Based on the agency’s models for climate and weather trends, NASA predicts that temperatures and rainfall will change drastically during the century to come. Globally, temperatures are expected to rise significantly. Precipitation will increase and decrease differently for various locations around the globe.
The end result: Your grandkids’ world is likely going to be a lot different from the one we live in now — and it won’t just be the crappy music.

Carter's Message to Space Aliens Finally Exits Our Solar System

NASA announced a monumental event this month; The renowned spacecraft known as Voyager 1 has exited our solar system.Thirty-six years ago, Voyager 1 departed Cape Canaveral on September 5, 1977 atop of a Titan-Centaur launch vehicle, joining sister ship Voyager 2 which was already en route to Jupiter.Voyager 2 had been hurled into space by her own Titan-Centaur two weeks earlier on August 20, 1977.

The twin spacecraft followed complex, pre-programmed orbits on a shared mission of capturing images and data on the solar system’s largest planets.Together, the Voyager spacecrafts executed close-up fly-by visits to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and a total of 48 of their moons.
It took nearly two years for the spacecrafts to reach Jupiter. Voyager 2 paid visits to all four of the giants over the course of ten years, from Jupiter in July of 1979 to Neptune in August of 1989.Voyager 1 saw Jupiter close-up in March of 1979 and Saturn in November of 1980.Seventeen years later, in February of 1998, Voyager 1 caught up to Pioneer 10 (launched in 1972) and became what NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory refers to as “humankind's most distant object.”
Voyager 1 is the first manmade item to go interstellar – That is, traveling beyond our Solar System.Voyager 1’s odometer now reads in excess of 11,647,362,655 miles (125.3 AU).Traveling at a speed exceeding 38,000 miles per hour (3.6 AU per year) for the past 36 years. And it still works.
Voyager 2 is loping along at a mere 35,000 miles per hour (3.3 AU per year).Having taken a couple of detours that Voyager 1 did not have scheduled, Voyager 2 is over 2 billion miles behind. The Voyager 2 odometer reading is around 9,537,265,829 (102.6 AU) and will join her sister ship at the solar system’s edge in 2020 after seven more years of straight-line coasting.
To get an idea of how far away Voyager 1 is now, imagine the Sun as the size of a basketball. Relative Earth would be the size of a BB, orbiting about 100 feet away.In that scale, Voyager would be nearly one mile beyond Earth.
In the period since the Voyagers left Earth, the Space Shuttle program was inaugurated and mothballed.William Shatner starred as the protagonist in Star Trek: The Motion Picture in which Voyager 1 was featured as the antagonist. And right about the time that Voyager 1 flew past Pluto, the poor thing got degraded from full planet status.

 http://www.giornalettismo.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Fukushima-cartoon-009.jpg

Mars Soil Has Lots Of Water For Explorers, NASA's Curiosity Rover Finds

Future Mars explorers may be able to get all the water they need out of the red dirt beneath their boots, a new study suggests

mars water

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has found that surface soil on the Red Planet contains about 2 percent water by weight. That means astronaut pioneers could extract roughly 2 pints (1 liter) of water out of every cubic foot (0.03 cubic meters) of Martian dirt they dig up, said study lead author Laurie Leshin, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
"For me, that was a big 'wow' moment," Leshin told SPACE.com. "I was really happy when we saw that there's easily accessible water here in the dirt beneath your feet. And it's probably true anywhere you go on Mars." [The Search for Water on Mars (Photos)]
The new study is one of five papers published in the journal Science today (Sept. 26) that report what researchers have learned about Martian surface materials from the work Curiosity did during its first 100 days on the Red Planet.
Soaking up atmospheric water
Curiosity touched down inside Mars' huge Gale Crater in August 2012, kicking off a planned two-year surface mission to determine if the Red Planet could ever have supported microbial life. It achieved that goal in March, when it found that a spot near its landing site called Yellowknife Bay was indeed habitable billions of years ago.
But Curiosity did quite a bit of science work before getting to Yellowknife Bay. Leshin and her colleagues looked at the results of Curiosity's first extensive Mars soil analyses, which the 1-ton rover performed on dirt that it scooped up at a sandy site called Rocknest in November 2012.
Using its Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, or SAM, Curiosity heated this dirt to a temperature of 1,535 degrees Fahrenheit (835 degrees Celsius), and then identified the gases that boiled off. SAM saw significant amounts of carbon dioxide, oxygen and sulfur compounds — and lots of water on Mars.
SAM also determined that the soil water is rich in deuterium, a "heavy" isotope of hydrogen that contains one neutron and one proton (as opposed to "normal" hydrogen atoms, which have no neutrons). The water in Mars' thin air sports a similar deuterium ratio, Leshin said.
"That tells us that the dirt is acting like a bit of a sponge and absorbing water from the atmosphere," she said.
Some bad news for manned exploration
SAM detected some organic compounds in the Rocknest sample as well — carbon-containing chemicals that are the building blocks of life here on Earth. But as mission scientists reported late last year, these are simple, chlorinated organics that likely have nothing to do with Martian life. [The Hunt for Martian Life: A Photo Timeline]
Instead, Leshin said, they were probably produced when organics that hitched a ride from Earth reacted with chlorine atoms released by a toxic chemical in the sample called perchlorate.
Perchlorate is known to exist in Martian dirt; NASA's Phoenix lander spotted it near the planet's north pole in 2008. Curiosity has now found evidence of it near the equator, suggesting that the chemical is common across the planet. (Indeed, observations by a variety of robotic Mars explorers indicate that Red Planet dirt is likely similar from place to place, distributed in a global layer across the surface, Leshin said.)
The presence of perchlorate is a challenge that architects of future manned Mars missions will have to overcome, Leshin said.
"Perchlorate is not good for people. We have to figure out, if humans are going to come into contact with the soil, how to deal with that," she said.
"That's the reason we send robotic explorers before we send humans — to try to really understand both the opportunities and the good stuff, and the challenges we need to work through," Leshin added.
A wealth of discoveries

The four other papers published in Science today report exciting results as well.
For example, Curiosity's laser-firing ChemCam instrument found a strong hydrogen signal in fine-grained Martian soils along the rover's route, reinforcing the SAM data and further suggesting that water is common in dirt across the planet (since such fine soils are globally distributed).
Another study reveals more intriguing details about a rock Curiosity studied in October 2012. This stone — which scientists dubbed "Jake Matijevic" in honor of a mission team member who died two weeks after the rover touched down — is a type of volcanic rock never before seen on Mars.
However, rocks similar to Jake Matijevic are commonly observed here on Earth, especially on oceanic islands and in rifts where the planet's crust is thinning out.
"Of all the Martian rocks, this one is the most Earth-like. It's kind of amazing," said Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "What it indicates is that the planet is more evolved than we thought it was, more differentiated."

The five new studies showcase the diversity and scientific value of Gale Crater, Grotzinger said. They also highlight how well Curiosity's 10 science instruments have worked together, returning huge amounts of data that will keep the mission team busy for years to come.
"The amount of information that comes out of this rover just blows me away, all the time," Grotzinger told SPACE.com. "We're getting better at using Curiosity, and she just keeps telling us more and more. One year into the mission, we still feel like we're drinking from a fire hose."
The road to Mount Sharp
The pace of discovery could pick up even more. This past July, Curiosity left the Yellowknife Bay area and headed for Mount Sharp, which rises 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) into the Martian sky from Gale Crater's center.
Mount Sharp has been Curiosity's main destination since before the rover's November 2011 launch. Mission scientists want the rover to climb up through the mountain's foothills, reading the terrain's many layers along the way.
"As we go through the rock layers, we're basically looking at the history of ancient environments and how they may be changing," Grotzinger said. "So what we'll really be able to do for the first time is get a relative chronology of some substantial part of Martian history, which should be pretty cool."
Curiosity has covered about 20 percent of the planned 5.3-mile (8.5 km) trek to Mount Sharp. The rover, which is doing science work as it goes, may reach the base of the mountain around the middle of next year, Grotzinger said.

Battle to save BBC TV's The Sky At Night

STARGAZERS in York have joined a national campaign to stop the BBC cancelling an iconic television show

Patrick Moore
Patrick Moore

Astronomy documentary The Sky At Night had the same permanent presenter, Patrick Moore, from its first airing in 1957 until 7 January 2013 after Moore’s death in December last year, making it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history.
But news that the popular monthly programme could be axed has caused dismay among fans and has led to an online petition.
Annette Newby, the secretary, of the York Astronomical Society, which has about 100 members, said: “The Sky at Night is a British institution and it is watched by astronomers everywhere.
There is very little science on the BBC and even less astronomy.
“This programme is the mainstay of information and education on astronomy and without it the BBC will fail their remit of being a Public Service Broadcaster.
“Our society chairman, Martin Dawson, has known Patrick Moore for many years and has visited his house on many an occasion.”
A BBC spokesman said: “The Sky at Night is on-air until the end of the year. Plans for subsequent series are being discussed.”
The petition called The BBC: Please do not axe The Sky At Night has more than 25,000 signatures and can be found at www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/the-bbc-please-do-not-axe-the-sky-at-night

- e' molto intenso fuori dalle citta'

By Rob Waugh
trad. Cristina Bassi

E i dati stanno facendo notizia.

http://www.risateonline.it/files/imagecache/full_640/vignette/old/119947_2005614172931_mcdonald.jpg

Recent headlines about alien life in our planet’s atmosphere have been shot down to earth. But scientists are still looking for messages from and signs of other civilizations among faraway stars—carrying on the tradition that started more than 50 years ago, when some of the era’s most brilliant scientific minds got together to discuss the astronomical possibilities.
In 1961, J.P.T. Pearman of the National Academy of Sciences approached astronomer Frank Drake to help convene a small, informal SETI conference at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Green Bank observatory. The core purpose of the meeting, Pearman explained, was to quantify whether SETI had any reasonable chance of successfully detecting civilizations around other stars.
Besides Drake and Pearman, three Nobel laureates attended. The other attendees were only slightly less celebrated. They included physicist Philip Morrison, who had co-authored a 1959 paper advocating a SETI program just like the one Drake undertook in 1960. A dark-haired and brilliant 27-year-old astronomy postdoc named Carl Sagan was, at the time, the youngest and arguably least distinguished name on the guest list.
A few days before the conference began, Drake tried to categorize the key pieces of information needed to estimate the number, N, of detectable advanced civilizations that might currently exist in our galaxy. Drake reasoned that the average rate of star formation in the Milky Way, R, placed a rough upper limit on the creation of new cradles for cosmic civilizations. Some fraction of those stars, fp, would actually form planets, and some number of those planets, ne, would be suitable for life. Some fraction of those habitable planets, fl, would actually blossom into living worlds, and some fraction of those living worlds, fi, would give birth to intelligent, conscious beings. The fraction of intelligent extraterrestrials that developed technologies that could communicate their existence across interstellar distances was fc, and the average longevity of a technological society was L.
When the conference opened on the morning of Nov. 1, 1961, after the guests were seated and sipping coffee, Drake wrote on a chalkboard: N = R fp ne fl fi fc L
That string of letters has come to be known as the “Drake equation.” Though Drake had intended it only to guide the next three days of the Green Bank meeting, the equation and its plausible values would come to dominate all subsequent SETI discussions and searches. At the meeting, it was the two final and most nebulous terms of Drake’s equation: fc, the fraction of intelligent creatures who would develop societies and technologies capable of interstellar communication, and L, the average longevity of an advanced technological civilization, that caused the most vigorous philosophical debate.
According to Morrison, history suggested that the emergence of technological societies might be a convergent phenomenon. The early civilizations of China, the Middle East, and the Americas all arose independently and generally followed similar lines of development. And yet their paths had ultimately diverged—the drivers of social change and technological progress were not at all clear. Despite China’s development of technologies such as gunpowder, compasses, paper, and the printing press hundreds of years before Europeans did, China experienced nothing equivalent to the colonization of the New World, the European Renaissance, and the successive scientific and industrial revolutions. Whether sending ships across oceans or messages among the stars, a society's ability to explore and expand appeared to be a matter not only of technological prowess, but also of choice. Whether any particular technological culture would ever attempt something as wild as interstellar communication seemed unpredictable.
The Green Bank attendees eventually guessed that between one-fifth and one-tenth of intelligent species would develop the capabilities and intentions to search for and signal other cosmic civilizations. That left only L, the typical lifetime of technological civilizations, for the group to consider.
Drake suspected that what really controlled the number of technological civilizations living in the cosmos was almost solely their longevity. The thought made Morrison shudder. He had worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II and had witnessed the detonation of the first atomic bomb. Humans had developed a global society, radio telescopes, and interplanetary rockets at roughly the same time as weapons of mass destruction. Perhaps all societies would proceed on similar trajectories, becoming visible to the wider cosmos at roughly the same moment they gained an ability to destroy themselves. In fact, Morrison estimated, if the average civilization endured only a decade before passing into oblivion, at any time there would most likely be only one communicative planetary system throughout the galaxy. One of the most compelling reasons to search for evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations, Morrison thought, would be to learn whether our own had a prayer of surviving its current technological adolescence.
Sagan attempted to counter the doomsaying, noting that we could not rule out some technological civilizations achieving global stability and prosperity either before or even after developing weapons of mass destruction. They might master their planetary environment and move on to exploit resources in the rest of their planetary system. Such a society could, in theory, persist for geological timescales of hundreds of millions or even billions of years, potentially lasting as long as its host star continued to shine. And if, somehow, that civilization managed to escape its dying sun and colonize other planetary systems ... well, perhaps then it would endure practically forever. Of all the attendees, Sagan was by far the most optimistic that technological civilizations could solve not only their many planetary problems, but also the manifold difficulties associated with interstellar travel. Somewhere out there, Sagan suggested, immortals passed their unending days amid the stars.
Drake’s best guess in 1961 walked the line between Morrison and Sagan: He speculated that L might be about 10,000 years, and that consequently perhaps 10,000 technological civilizations were scattered throughout the Milky Way along with our own. It was probably not coincidental that Drake’s personal estimate rendered the successful detection of alien civilizations still quite difficult but not entirely beyond our capabilities: By his reckoning, only 10 million stars would need to be monitored to obtain an eventual detection, though the search could take decades, even centuries.
At the conference’s end, as the guests drank Champagne, Otto Struve, the director of Green Bank observatory, offered up a toast: “To the value of L. May it prove to be a very large number.”
