Lights lead to claims

STRANGE lights in the sky during the evening have sparked debate among curious Standard readers.

Alistair Waugh spotted ‘an array of lights’ which were white and red above Windmill Drive in Walkwood about 6.45pm last Wednesday (December 7).

Describing it as a ‘flying wing’, he added: “As it passed overhead the lights made it possible to view the shape of the object as triangular, similar to a microlight.

“However, the object’s construction appeared more substantial than that of a microlight, larger and with no passenger undercarriage.”

The issue caused controversy on Facebook, with some readers such as Jennie-Anne Alcock and Amy Collinson saying it could be either one or two planes rather than a UFO, although Redditch is not on the usual flight path for Birmingham airport.

Anne Bennett claimed the lights belonged to an Emirates flight travelling into Birmingham from Dubai, but a spokeswoman for the company said the flight had landed by 6.45pm and it was unlikely to have travelled over the town. A Ministry of Defence spokesman also ruled out the possibility of the armed forces sending a plane over Redditch around that time.

However, Sarah Chandler had a different explanation for the strange sighting, saying: “Perhaps it’s Santa on a test run.”
